The horses used by the Crusaders were specially bred warhorses, known as destriers. These horses were larger and stronger than most other breeds, standing at around 16 hands high and weighing up to 1,500 pounds. They were also highly trained and obedient, able to charge into battle without hesitation and withstand the impact of knights in full armor.
Destriers were often equipped with heavy armor to protect them in battle, including padded leather barding and metal plates over their head and neck. They were also outfitted with a variety of weapons, such as sharp spikes or blunt maces attached to their front hooves, which could be used to strike at enemy combatants.
The Crusaders believed that these horses were a gift from God, and they treated them with great respect and care. They would often adorn their horses with colorful and elaborate trappings, including silk and velvet saddles, ornate bridles, and even gilded armor. In some cases, the horses were even given their own coat of arms as a symbol of their loyalty and valor in battle.
